Memorial Cards, Funeral Cards, Memoriam Cards
According to one source, these cards weren’t originally printed for the deceased, but as more general religious cards. With the invention of lithography, (early printing), the Roman Catholic Church began to print holy cards with a picture of a saint or Bible scene on one side and a prayer, with a promise of an ‘indulgence’ on the other.
The could range from between 100 days up to years. A quarantine is an indulgence period of forty days – or a time where the holder of the memorial card, prays for the deceased, each day for forty days. They pray for the sins a person may have committed, to be forgiven.
